Following are four common forms of Internet connection, ranging from
the most rudimentary telephone wire connection to a cable wire connection.
Your choice of type of connection will depend on the number of Internet
users you anticipate in your company as well as the prices and speeds
offered by the company providing your Internet connection.
To obtain Internet access, you must contact a local
Internet Service Provider (ISP). An ISP installs a simple connection
from your computer to the Internet, and often also provides other services,
such as supplying a specified number of e-mail addresses, and a company
web site address.
Tips to Consider When Selecting The Type of Internet
Connection You Need:
Ask you Internet Service Provider what the maximum
waiting time is for downloading web pages at peak traffic times.
If your ISP supplies multiple types of connections, such as telephone
modem, ISDN, and ADSL, you may want to compare the download times and
prices of each of these connection types. A very slow connection
will interfere with tasks such as downloading software. You can
also gain perspective by asking the provider how many users can be accommodated
per modem for simple telephone wire connections versus ISDN connections.
Ask your Internet Service Provider if there is a
limit on the duration of time you can stay connected to the Internet.
Try to find a provider that does not impose a limit, as a limit involves
the provider automatically terminating your connection at the end of
the proscribed period.
It is important to note that you need to install
a protective firewall if using a cable connection. A firewall is hardware
or software designed to block unauthorized entry to your internal systems
from the Internet or other connections. A cable-based Internet
connection is necessary since a cable connection keeps your systems
perpetually signed on to the Internet.
